Hi-

I am a musician who has fairly extensive recording experience, but until now have been limited to basic 4-track home recording or paid studio time. I'm about to purchase a new apple g4 powerbook, and am wondering the best course of action for an affordable yet highly functional home recording setup. I want to be completely self-sufficient: from recording to mixdown to a final CD burn. If anyone could help, I was wondering exactly what would be necessary for this complete setup. I've got a budget of +- $2,000 to work with, if this is possible. Please reply at benjaminskoch@yahoo.com, if possible.

thanks much,
ben

Ben,

Is'nt the powerbook a laptop ? If so it will be somewhat limited to audio recording. Your best bet is a desktop.
Your'e going to need a quality soundcard, breakout box or multiple input interface or external mixer.
And of course, software. There are several demo version you can download to give it a whirl to see what works best for you.
I've also been reading bad reviews and even petitions about the new macs being really noisy...food for thought

It isn't my area of expertise, but as I understand it, most laptops are very limited in terms of the sound cards they accept, and you will need a serious soundcard upgrade to do what you want. Get a dedicated PC and then start asking questions about soundcards, mics, and preamps.-Richie
