Hey everyone. I am kinda new to this forum.

i am getting more and more into recording and everything, and was interested in starting to make beats.

and i was wondering what is the best way to start out?

i actually heard from a friend about fruity loops and i downloaded the demo but other than that i dont have anything.

i know it's mostly done through a midi controller.so i was wondering what is a good one to get and what is some good software for beat making.

thanks for all of your help.

Welcome to the forum.

To make beats you can go many different ways. MPC, Software, Keyboard (Triton, Motif)...

It all depends on your budget and what you want to do...

Right now if you have a computer, you can get software to do the job. Fruity Loops is a good start. A lot of good beats have been made on Fruity Loops. But, the key is to make and customize your own sounds.

Reason 3.0 is also another software program to make beats. It's more money and complicated... It might take you more time to learn.. Since you have been playing around with Fruity Loops already, you might just go and buy it...

To mke hot beats it's all about practice and finding your own tips... Play around... It won't happen over night, but if you have fun while learning, great...

any reccomendations on a midi controller?

and about how much do they go for?

m-audio has a lot of nice midi controllers.

i never picked up a midi controller, but i did find a 60-something key keyboard lying around my friend's house which had a midi out. that works just fine for now. so take that into consideration, and you could do it bootleg like that for about $60.

but Change is right, Oxygen and the like only have 1-2 octaves for midi control. which is okay, but if you want to widen your range, you have to make adjustments in the software before you continue. i think it's easier to have more octaves so you can hear how it would sound right away.

Bless.

What about using a synth as a midi controller?

i plan on getting the microcorg. it says it doubles as a midi controller. but is there any downside to using that?

Yep, like said go for M-Audio Radium, 61 Key controller or the smaller ones. Nice keyboards at a nice price...

I fell in love with the Keystation Pro-88 and the Axiom 61. When I get a bigger desk, one of those is definitely on my to get list.
