standard grounding/shielding

QUESTION : all fenders seem to require additional shielding and/or grounding so why aren't all fenders standard equipped with it??? they've been making single coil pu guitars for 50 years now, so they should be aware of the problem?
 
Shielding works at varrying degrees. What works for one set of pickups in one particular room might not react the same in another. So if Fener were to apply any shielding and taunt that it reduces hum by XX% and people didn't think it did... they would be returning a lot of guitars. Although I do believe shielding works there is still a school of thought that says it really doesn't matter.
 
Because it is expensive, and they don't need to do it to sell guitars.

light : i was hoping there was another, more technical reason but you're propably right.

Why not just give it a try! All the supplies aren't going to cost more than $20 or so and it'll probably take the better half of a day to complete and when you're done you can decide for yourself. Personally I've thought of doing myself several times except I'm too lazy. There is a guy on eBay that sells form fitted pickguard shielding for Strats and Tele's. You may want to look into one of those as a starting point.

You can get copper shielding tape from StewMac. That stuff is super easy to work with and costs about $12 for a pretty big roll.

no, no, no i don't want to shield any of my guitars i was just curious if there was a 'real' reason why fender didn't do it.
