standalone recorder

i'm looking for something that I could take "on site" to record like, live stuff....or, say..a piano.

becuase i don't have a piano in my house...but, i have one I could use at school. So, I want something I could make a nice recording on...and then import it into my computer...

I guess something that is 24bit...has a decent preamp...but, I would probably want to take my own preamp. ideally I'd like something that I could run a really nice pre into and get a decent result...what do you guys think?

8 tracks would be more than enough...

Have you looked at the Korg D12....it records 4 tracks simultaneously, lots of effects, good interface. $900 US

Other options if you can spend more money.....Yamaha, Akai, and Korg. The Yamaha 2816 is 24-bit. I've used 24-bit recording on my Akai DPS16 and the difference between it and 16 bit is negligible but it does have many advantages...but only the more expensive recorders have it. I predict in another year every recorder at all price points will be 24-bit. I also predict the Lakers will win their fourth championship in a row.

I'm glad I bought something portable (Akai DPS16) because I've needed that portability many, many times. I just wanted to mention that before someone recommends a PC based system. Using a stand alone for recording and your PC for mixing and burning CD's makes sense to me.

yah...well, I have a nice pc setup for the in home stuff...which, is a great system.

but, sometimes you need portability...easy enough to integrate thanks for the suggestions.
