stand alone software

Hi guys - I'm not new but there are gaps in my understanding...

When is stand alone software used, such as Reaktor - for playing live? I've always used these things as vsti's & found out there is a difference between the 2. Thanks.
 
I'm not quite sure I understand your question, but stand alone means a program doesn't need to be hosted within a DAW or other program. One VSTi I can think of is EMU Proteus VX. It can run either as a plug-in in a DAW or by itself. I guess you would use it as a standalone for live performance like you suggested, or practicing, writing songs, looking for or developing a new patch, etc.
