I am hopefully about to move into a new house that has a big basement, and was planning to use this basement to do some guitar recordings, micing up my amp close with 57 and distant with an NT-1. Now I don't want to hump the PC downstairs and was thinking of getting a DAW to do the recordings. My original thought was to get an Akai DPS16 and do ALL my recording on this and mix down (by the way is the dig output of the DPS16 24 bit?) to the PC to master (better plugins, cd burning etc.) Now however the cost of a 16 track recorder is making me think again a little and I was wondering if I could use a lower cost 8 track to record guitars and then transfer these tracks to the pc and do the rest of the recording on the pc. Has anyone done this and if so what are the pitfalls I should look out for and are there any tips and tricks I should be aware of

Thanks

cindy. you can get amd sempron pc's that will do 40 tracks
for 400 bucks where i live. or even used durons that will do 40 tracks for 150 bucks. why bother ? just put in another PC. way more flexible imho.

Thanks for the info, I'm a bit confused though are you saying that you can get a pc (duron) for $150. Can you elaborate a bit, the pc I currently have I bought in Circuit City! So I don't know a huge amount about them

thanks

yes cindy. just get a used amd duron pc in very good shape.
not more than a couple of years old. you find them in your local bargain newspaper. just put a nice shiny new hard drive in it 7200 rpm.
just make sure it has 512 ram memory in it. then put the multitrack software i use on it for 49 bucks (48 tracks) - powertracks from pgmusic.com
(just try the demo and be happy. ) just add mics, mixer and a cheap pair of monitors. have you already got the latter ? a good soundcard is an audiophile 2496 (100 bucks). if you have you wouldnt need your other system.
i just put recently a benq cd burner in an older duron system for 19 bucks. works like a champ. or as i said a sempron is cheap as well.
just add sound card, mics, and a yamaha mg mixer if you dont have one.
(dirt cheap).
heres some example pc prices....of many thousands on the net.
