Everywhere I turn it seems people are flat out disappointed with the album. Is there ANYTHING good about it?
You're not the first person I've heard freak about the drums on this one... I haven't heard it myself or even the entire title track, so I don't have an opinion yet. ( To Be honest, I just really couldn't hang with anything after Pastor of Muppets... I don't know if I grew out of that style of music, or if I wasn't flexible enough in my preferences to roll with the direction their writing was taking... Maybe it was just the absence of Cliff Burton in their over all sound.. I don't know, but I really wanted this to be the record that recaptured that "Something" in a new way for them.)
I'm just livin' in the past I guess.

Seriously, the album blows and the production blows. The snare sounds like the top of a trash can. I thought it was supposed to be "revolutionary" for Metallica...even nonrecordists can hear that it sounds like shit. Aside from the shit drums, it's freaking nu metal.

I dont like it that much either, BUT (a huge but there) don't you think they MAY have wanted it to sound RAW and like it was recorded with one mic in a small room???????? They have done much much better, obviously. So, I think they wanted it raw and people can't deal with it. my 2 cents!

I love metallica they where off the chain. songs lyk damage inc, enter sandman, one, sad but true, fade to black, and songs lyk those kicked ass and after this album (st. anger) i came out terribly dissapointed. its just bad to hear an awesome quality band go down into a bad quality band. hopefully they'll pull themselves back up.

A lot of "Critics" and non-critics alike say that the "Black Album" made Metallica a household name. This may or may not be true. (Depends whose household I guess.) The "One" video and the "Black Album" (Especially) IMO took them from public nusiance to Industry darling statuss, BUT is "St. Anger" a blessing in disguise in that perhaps it will mark their fall from main stream grace and back into mandatory solid metal on their next effort,
or are there enough "kids" buying to keep the lights burning in the temple of a kinder gentler Metallica?
Only time will tell I suppose.

It's their record, so they CAN do whatever they want, BUT I don't understand why they used a producer if they REALLY wanted to be "Different". It seems like saying "We want a great recording of a bad recording technique so we can feel artistic" That just doesn't wash with me very well. It MIGHT have been cool as hell if they used a bunch mental patients that once owned a four track or people that simply had no clue what things could sound like to produce and engineer. (Hell, I was availible and fit the criteria!)
To me THAT would have been much more interesting or perhaps have "Artistic integrity" (If there is such a thing) instead of a "Real" producer getting crappy sounds and doing contrived bunk edits in pro tools while likely sitting around saying "It's a damn shame you guys already did an album called Garage days revisited !"
Maybe I'm wrong, but can you ever really set out to be "Low Fi" with an expensive console and an experienced producer, then expect it to work? Can you even create "Low Fi" or is it a side effect? Can you put Low Fi and Pro Tools in the same sentence seriously? I just don't get it.

if i got the money i'd do the same thing down the road, $ greed drives them now, yes, $ buys sex i, myself would invest in oil and gas and not give a shit about any new music really, that depends on how bad the RIAA was screwing me though, alot of artice will have to work thanks to the RIAA... scum of the earth 10x...
james has always been a joke in my book, sorry, it's just my view of them, sure they lead the way of sorts on the death dark metal road but in no way did they do all that much for it, imho...
