Let me first say that none of the plug-ins or software mentioned is or was pirated. That said, I have a project that I mixed at my friend's studio, and his legally-obtained (straight from a sales rep for the company: he went to one of the recording schools around here) Waves SSL Channel plugin expired. It was some sort of a trial/demo deal he got from his school, and obviously if they were cracked, they wouldn't have expired, and/or he could simply crack them again. This, however, was not the case.

Anyway, point being, I have a project that used the plugin extensively, and now that it has expired, I'm not sure what I can do. The project has already been completed, bounced, mastered, and released, so it's not an emergency or anything, but I'd like to be able to bounce down stems for future editing/re-mixing/whatever, and I'd like to keep the sound we created in the studio vs. trying to hack together some of his other plugins.

Any ideas? I've debated trying to crack the plug-in just to bounce down what I need, then un-installing it, but I really don't like doing it, I'm not currently doing it, I haven't done it for years (all of my software has been legally obtained), and I'm morally against it as my father is a software engineer, so if there's ANY other way around my problem (other than paying $1200 for software I need to use for one day, and that I can't use after that as I don't have a TDM system myself). It says the demo won't work on systems that have the full version installed :/

You can download a demo from the Waves website:

http://www.waves.com/content.aspx?id=260

The plugins aren't just available as TDM, but also as RTAS.

I believe that you get either a 30 day iLok license, or up to 30 plug-in loads - whichever comes first (if that makes sense)

Hope that helps...

Alternatively try to convince Waves that you deserve an NFR license from them - though they'll likely refer you to the demo.

a) re-install the demo (it might not let you on a system that's already had it once.
b) Port to a new rig and install the demo (might not be possible depending on what else you used)
c) rent the plugin for a day from your local pro audio rental company (quite easy to do around here...not sure about where you are.)

I am intrigued about C... you can rent plugins?!

yes, I haven't looked that hard but I know for a fact that Digidesign will let you rent plugins from them..not sure whether Waves will do the same but that's something to look into anyways! Also, I know of a pro audio rental company around here will rent plugs to you....

It's possible for plugin manufacturers to issue temporary iLok assets; whether they do or not is up to them!

Basically they time out after a set period of time.

Typically these licenses are given to resellers and to staff, rather than full assets so that if they leave the company/try to steal them, the iLok assets are essentially worthless.

This is also how Digidesign "rent" plugins out.

The demo is ilok specific. Therefore so long as you download the demo authorization to a different ilok than the one you had originally put it on, you'll get another 14 day demo. Worst case scenario you buy a new ilok for 40 bucks. It's cheaper than renting it.

You could try either telling the computer that it is September 18th, or restoring it to a point when the plugins still worked.

This won't work when its iLok based. It doesn't go by the time on your computer, but by the license on your iLok. :)
