We have just added an in-ear monitoring system, and am needing advice on the best way to setup.
Since we only have a stereo channel to record our mix, i have compression on a Sub Insert 1 to add a little compression to the recording.

My question is, what's the best way to monitor our playing? Sub-outs? Headphone jacks? Our M-audio usb interface has a muddy sound from the headphone jack so it seems out of the question. Right now I don't think we need to separate anyone from the mix.

Also, I have issues with the monitor volume versus what the level shows in my DAW, I'm super confused about that if anyone wants to chime in on that....

Thanks guys

What does the system include? Do you have a headphone amp with multiple outputs, or some other way of distributing the signal?

Unless you have some sort of spectacular sounding compressor you'll be better off adding compression with plugins after you track. What output of the board are you recording?

Probably the best way to monitor is to use the monitor outputs of the SR24.4. It has four of them, aux outs 1-4, for up to four mono or two stereo mixes. Connect them to your headphone amp(s).

There's not enough information there for me to figure out what your trouble is.

We have a Nady Wireless In-Ear Monitor system, receivers for each member. (4)

Would I be better off using this for the drums? I'm trying to consider the best idea when we play shows, take effects rack? i.e vocal effects etc...

Right now the Wireless Nady is receiving signal from the headphone output... Aux sends sound right, is this the norm for on-stage monitoring?

Hope this helps, I appreciate your input

Yes, an effects rack would be normal. If you return effects like reverb to a stereo channel of the board rather than an aux return you can put effects into your monitor mix. Compressors need to be set by ear by someone listening to the mix in the room. Setting compressors when mixing from stage is not likely to end up with good results.

Yes, pre-fader aux sends are the normal way of doing stage monitors, whether wedges or IEMs.

I will give this a try, I'm interested in trying the Stereo Returns as well, this would help a lot with vocal effects...
Thanks a lot you tha man

Use the PRE aux sends for monitors. Put a limiter across the outputs so you don't accidentally blow yer heads off.
Use the compressor going to your recorder the same way - as a limiter just to stop overload.

This seems to work well, but I can't get a stereo feed with two channels, can I not use Y TRS cables? Component wise i thought they are wired the same as a theoretical "splitter" cable...

Thanks all for the input thus far

I have it working almost with Aux 1-2, but whatever the Red side of TRS cable is, barely comes through when I turn all the way up. Tried different Aux same effect...

Do you have a Nady EO3 PEM? Those are mono. Use one regular unbalanced line cord with 1/4" TS plugs from the aux send of your choice.

Well crap I guess I didn't know that before I bought them bleh. Works just as well then I guess.

...To touch on the previous though, if I return vocal effects to the stereo channel instead of Aux return, and add Aux 1 volume to the channel, I can monitor the effects?

Yes, you can put reverb etc. in your IEMs by returning the effect to a channel and turning it up in your monitor mix. The stereo channels of the SR24.4 are handy for this.
