We have 2 SR-16's due to the fact that I've used up all the patterns on the 1st SR-16 with my own. The way things are headed with the 2nd machine we're looking at getting a third!
Clearly the answer here is MIDI. The problem here is that none of us know anything in depth about MIDI.

Here's what I'd like to do, please comment on whether or not this is possible-

Using a laptop with sequencer software installed and some kind of midi converter box, I would send the midi out put from the SR-16 to the laptop.

Now I realize that it would show up a one single song, rather than a series of repeated patterns, but once it was in there I would be able to edit that song and play it back, through the SR-16, using the SR-16 as a sampler.

Thanks for any help!

SR-16 Editor

You may want to check out this SR-16 Editor for your PC. There is a demonstration version that works for 10 minutes. I haven't done a lot with it but it may help you.

On another topic; what user drum kits have you created? I'm somewhat new to the SR-16 and I'm looking for a good kick and snare without any effects. Would layering a couple of sounds help?

Use a Midi SysEx dump to store your patterns as midid data to a Midi Librarian software on your PC, then you can load whichever series of patches you need to work with.

Yo Grug:

Take a look at the Boss 770 drum box before you buy another SR-16.

Very cool sounds on the box and it does as much, if not more, than the 16.

CD

Grug,
I too have two SR16's, and have the same problem w/space.
At first I was going to dump to tape and then reload , but here's something you might try. I SAVE to CD, use the same procedure as if you were saving to tape, but instead of a tape deck, use a CD recorder. CD save and load are much more reliable than tape. And it's a lot cheaper than other methods.
In a live situation, you can delete the contents of one of your 16's and reload using a discman type player out of the earphone jack. This might sound crazy, but it works slick.
