I love my Tascam RS-20B for individual tracks and for mixes...

Hard to find and the prices have gotten stupid...got mine for around $100 years ago.

I expect I'd be just as happy with the Fostex equivalent Beck suggested...easier to find methinks.

I used the Tascam on this rough test of my Ampex MM-1000 tracking some drums...its on a sidechain of the mix buss in this application.

In this version of the test I'm messing with muting and EQ settings as well as reverb sourcing, so there are some instances where you can hear the mix without reverb as well as reverb isolated.

That's a nice drum sound. And great playing too.Nice groove!
What did you mic up the kit with for that example?

Thanks!

Studio Projects B3s haphazardly hanging overhead in cardioid, and an Audix D-6 inside the kick.

Mic pres were the onboard pres on my early 80's Tascam prototype mixer, no dynamics processing, some careful EQ notching on the kick and some mild mid and HF boosting on the overheads.

Tape was Ampex 499 but the Ampex machine hasn't been calibrated in I don't know how many years/decades and surely its not setup for 499.

Tape just sounds good.

The kick sounds huge in the monitors.

But the reverb does a nice job.
