Splitting Tracks

Hey guys,
There's alot of talk around here about taking a signal, say, a guitar, and panning part of it left or right, and only applying processing to that panned signal. How is this done? I may have answered my own question now, is it that you record in stereo, thus have two tracks to work with? If anyone has hints on how you do this, or what kind of results come from it, i'd be greatly appreciative. Catch ya'll later...

For those without a mixer this can still be done by running two mics or an instrument out and a mic and panning like you said. You can get some different textures out of the same instruments and voices. Then add effects to one side and get even more variety.

You can copy your recorded track to a new track and process them seperately.
