splitting a live recording into tracks

When you get a live bootleg, the different songs are each given their own their own track... It seems like there must be a pretty easy way to break up a live recording into different tracks because everyone does it.

My question: How can I do this? Is there a simple way to do this on Cool Edit?

Import the continuous tracks into CEP, then for each song find the beginning and ending. Highlight the part that is that song only, and go to Edit/Mixdown and click. You'll end up with the song in Edit View where you can trim the start and finish (or fade in/out applause etc) and then save it as a stereo .wav file.

Repeat as needed.

I do it 2 different ways. One is I trim the file with fade ins/outs so it'll fit on 1 CD. I write down the start time (in CD format) on a sheet of paper for each track (or wherever I want an index). Then I create a cue sheet that tells my software where I want all the indexes (and other info like song names, etc). Then I burn the CD.

The other way is to download Audacity (free download, just google it), import the big wav file, select the section you want, export to wav, delete that section from the original file and continue for the rest of the songs. It'll leave everything seemless (assuming you're using your software correctly) and you can name and number the tracks as you wish.

I use Audacity when I'm taking a DAT recording that I plan on uploading to some of the traders sites because I can convert to FLAC without it leaving the hard drive. The only issue I've had is that it doesn't always align the indexes on sector boundaries (important on the traders sites).

I use cue sheets when I don't have a lot of hard drive space because all of the tracks plus the big wav file can take up a lot of room. Or I don't feel like doing it in Audacity.

Of course as lpdeluxe has said this can be done in Cool Edit. I just find it faster and easier to do in Audacity. I hope that helps.

Waverepair can do it automatically - find track, split tracks etc ALSO has manual overrides so you can check & alter before splitting - does fade in & out, EQ , normalisation etc IF required.
