You might check into some Gotoh's before you buy sperzel. I like sperzels because I find the thumbscrew on the back easy to use, but the Gotohs have the advantage of looking more like a regular tuner.

I much prefer the Gotoh Magnum Lock tuners over the Sperzel locking tuners. I have guitars with both, but when I replace tuners as I have done on a few of my guitars (Yamaha APXII, Gibson Les Paul, Custom Tele) I choose the Gotoh. I love the fact that you just thread the string through the hole and turn the tuning key.

I had problems with the darn thumscrew coming off of the low e string tuner. On several gigs, I would be playing and see that thing on the floor, lucky I found it every time. Sometimes, I would find one of the others loose. I tightened them about as much as I think I could without stripping them. Put some teflon tape on the threads, hasn't done it since. I put a lot of miles on that guitar, and they still work fine, very well made. I have not compared them to other brands, but I think they are on the heavy side, which might have an effect on the guitar's tone. I am going to put the originals back on one of these days, and see if I can tell any difference...

I have liked mine, but I like my buddies on this strat plus more. his are the fender type of locking tuners and they just seem a bit more robust.

I am going to have to agree with those suggesting Gotoh. The Sperzels are fine gears, and the quality is very high. I don't have anything negative to say about them (which, if you know me, is high praise), but the Gotoh 510 series of gears, if you can find them, is the nicest thing on the market, bar none. They make them with the locking mechanism, and they are excellent. If you can find them (which is difficult) you will be very happy with them. Strangely, the place with the widest retail selection I have found is the wood and metal machinery importer Grizzly. Their new president is a guitar maker, and he has them selling wood and parts for guitars.

Major Tom, good idea about the teflon tape! I will use this idea.

I have the Fender/Sperzel tuners on my Deluxe Plus Strat, and I lost the low-E nut last summer at an outdoor gig. I didnt notice until the next day. The guy had actually found it in the gravel and saved it for me (he had no idea what it was). Good thing, it was looking like a major pain to find a replacement.

Re: Sperzal Turners

The little bearing never came out when the cap screw fell off? I have them on one of my strats and haven't had a problem yet.

i ordered the sperzel tuners form GC. should be there around saturday :)
