I have $1000 to spend. I have enough mics and pre-amps for now. I want to get an audio interface for my Mac G4 400mHz computer. It needs to be portable (use it for recording in the studio and live with a laptop). I am thinking about getting the MOTU 828mkII. What are your opinions? The website says you can use it as a standalone mixer. Obviously, this is not as easy to use for mixing as a standalone hard mixer, but has anyone used this equipment for mixing live? I also like that you can use it live without a computer.

I've heard the 828 works well with Mac - with PC ... a lot of people seem to have problems getting up and running. A friend of mine has a Motu 2408 (I believe that's the model), and a G4. It works very well for him.

PC user here, but I will vouch for the 828mkII. I've got one and I love it.
It would be somewhat of a pain to use without a computer tho .... All you have to work with then are the six little knobs, seeing as how you have a laptop .... no reason you couldn't drag that along also to use the GUI to control mixer functions.

I'd have an easier time spending your money if I had it with me. I think I could set up something with paypal for your transfer ;)
