Specific question about Masterlink DPS

Hello,
When setting the limiter threshhold to -4db, is it also
necessary to set the compression at -4db (or at some other
number, or is it not necessary or desirable to use compression at
all)?

They're completely independent. Use the compressor to even out your levels. Use the Limiter to increase the "apparent" loudness of your CD.
