Speakon into "bare wire" connectors -- Did this overheat my Behringer powered mixer?

HELP! I am new to home recording and live sound. My Behringer PMX 2000 started shutting off randomly when I was playing. I was told it was probably overheating, but I don't know why (malfunction or my mistake).
I know It's a budget mixer. The speakers I have just have the red and black "bare speaker wire"(I'm not sure of the technical name) connections, so the salesman told me to cut a speakon cable in half and stick the bare wire ends into the corresponding connector (black to black and White to Red).
The speakers say 250 Watt, 8 ohm, 40HX-35kHz, sensitivity 94dB 1 Watt/1Meter. The mixer says 250 Watt@4ohm
180 Watt@8ohm
[4ohm min load]
and has 3 speakon connectors:
Right/Mono Main , Bridge, Left/Monitor
all 3 say: Pinout
1+ pos, 1- neg and there is a note saying:
DO NOT CONNECT LEFT OR RIGHT OUTPUTS WHEN
USING BRIDGE OPTION!!
Hope someone can help me out.
I would like to use pretty much all of the inputs during a live performance for recording and mix purposes (some instruments mic'd, others from the amp output into the system -- is this bad?). I would also like to use monitors, and still use the same speakers I have if possible. Any insight would be appreciated. PS, I'm poor, so I need the bare bones options that won't ruin my equipment. Thanks!
