Speaker question

ive got a set of klipsch 5.1 surround sound speakers hooked up to my computer, if i was to plug my guitar directly into my computer, would i get decent quality guitar sound out of my speakers / would i blow my speakers out (im not planning to play too loud, just wondering if the reverb might kill them)
 
Mnkey, do you want to do this to record your guitar or just to hear yourself? If its just to hear yourself get a small guitar amp. If its to record you need recording software, and no you won't blow your speakers since what is driving them is the soundcard that you currently have. As a matter of fact your guitar will sound vvvvery low if you don't hookup a pre-amp (i.e. a small mixer) between the guitar and computer.
 
Its true. Plugging the guitar litterally direct into a sound card is pointless. You have to condition (drive) the guitar. Example: hooking speakers directly up to a cd player does nothing. Gotta amp it
 
i should have mentioned this before:
yes i already have thought thorough that aspect, i have a small powered mixer im hooking up inbetween

all i really need to know is weather im going to do damage to my speakers

the reason im asking this is because i metioned it to a friend who wasnt completely sure about his theory, but he said if im not carefull il blow out the speakers because of the reverb

And just a side note, will the sound quality be compareable to a amp (im not talking about volume, just quality)
 
i dont think u need to worry to much about blowing the speakers.......what u need to worry about is the lousy sound quality your gonna get out of em'. If your gonna run direct into a computer you might wanna think about a DI box, there are lots of them on the market fairly cheap....perhaps an amp modeler like the Line6 POD. If your just wanting to get some sound out of an electric guitar......your gonna be better off spending 50 bucks and getting a cheap 10 or 15 watt practice amp.
 
One step ahead of you, i already thought bout that one, but im not getting a preamp, im gonna use guitar preamp software (e.g. Steinberg Warp VST Virtual Guitar Amp Collection Plug In)
If really just worried about blowing out the spekaers
