What are good home recording monitors?

I'm currently using Altec Lansing speakers that plug straight into my soundcard.

The playback sounds fine when I record, but I'm limited because I have no mixer....and these speakers are probably not very accurate when it comes to mixing.

I'm going to purchase the behringer UB502 mixer...What are good monitors that would complete this setup?

I mainly record guitar/vocals and midi bass/drum tracks....

I have been recording without a mixer...and getting good results..

Do I need some kind pf power amp to drive the monitors? Or will the mixer give me that....

In my opinion, the UB502 (it's a very small mixer) won't do you anything but getting the signals into the computer. It won't be able to drive any speakers, you need an amplifier for that...

And it would be nice to know what kind of budget you have.

Budget for speaker monitors

My budget is around $200.00 for monitors....

The UB502 mixer is $100.00 Canadian...

I'm willing to spend around $200.00 for speaker monitors...

I do not have a power amp yet....so the speakers would have to be amplified or I could purchase a power amp....

What's the most inexpensive way to go and still get good results?

My Altec Lansing speakers are ok but probably not great for mixing...

If possible a list of amplified speakers that I could run from the UB502 would be a great help...!!

for 740 canadian you can get a pair of Powered Yorkville YSM1p's
anything under that is not really in monitoring speaker territorty.

You could see what kind of price you could get on those Studiophile bx5's or whatever their smallest ones are, might be a bit cheaper.

Those Powered Yorkville YSM1p's look nice, but way out (like 3.5 times) of his budget!

Yyz_u4ea, I had the same problem, (finding monitors in my budget), so I did what I had to do -- upped my budget!
Really, I'd suggest looking at Ebay or used music store. You will find passive monitors in your budget there, but then you still need an amp. Use anything until you get money for one.
You might try an Alesis RA- (100,150,300, or 500 to fit $) amplifier (used on Ebay of course) for decent quality but reletively inexpensive sound. I just got an RA-500, and I can tell a difference from the Pioneer A/V reciever I was using as an amp when running my JBL monitors.
