Hi All,

I have a small studio set up at home, ever since I replaced the small mixer, my studio speakers are now popping (pretty bad and worrying) whenever I turn them off, always one more severe than the other. Here is my setup:

Two Samson Flat Response Speakers, Samson Resolve 80A's.
Behringer Xenyx 1002FX Mixer. (NB: This mixer is constantly power on, no off switch, I turn the rest of my studio off, but the mixer stays on permanently).
Delta 44 sound card with break out box.

I have two output leads coming out of 1 and 2 on my breakout box, into tape in L/R (1/2). Sound then goes out of my mixer through control room out L/R to my speakers.

I have cables coming out of lines 7/8 and 9/10 back into my breakout box for recording purposes. Hardly used.

I turn my PC off, turn all faders down, knobs left on my mixer, turn my speakers off, pop/POP. Please remember, when I had my old mixer Behringer UB1204, I used to turn that off too, no popping, I'm thinking it's got something with the constant power still coming out from the mixer being constantly on? Keeping the signal warm/alive?

I think, that's a big THINK, I heard them pop when I switched off the light the other night, but I've been switching the light on and off constantly without a sound.

Everything runs through one power board behind the desk.

Something to do with balanced, unbalanced cables?

It's got me, so, any assistance in the matter would be greatly appreciated, maybe you've had this problem with a similar setup in the past?

Eagerly awaiting :)

Thanks guys,

Regards,
Jeff

It could be a problem with the PC, though there is many variables. Is everything grounded? Including internal speaker wiring? Do you kill the master/output section on the mixer when you shut it off? Do you zero the faders? Just some things to inspect/try out...

Hi,

I'll presume nothing is grounded only because I don't know much about grounding. But, I can confirm that every now and then when I switch off the light in the room, I hear a small pop from the speakers, what could be causing this? If I ground them will it fix the problem? Maybe I should plug them into a separate outlet to the rest of the equipment?

There doesn't seem to be any buzz sounds or the like, not that I can hear anyway, just a pop when they're turned off.

If anyone else has anymore advise, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Jeff

I'm no expert at recording or electrics but if you have the same popping sound when you're turning a light on and off then I would suggest something in that room (wiring) terms is either not grounded or a cable is breaking or exposed. It could be an idea to try your speakers in a different room see if you have the same problem if not then get an electrian to come have a look at your wiring (behind the walls, under floorboards etc)

One quick inexpensive check: Get an outlet electrical tester from a home improvement center. The kind than has the 3 power cable prongs on one end and three colored lights on the other. This will tell you if the outlet is wired correctly mostly eliminating in wall problems and avoiding initial cost of electrician troubleshooting. They are like $6 or so. I have found many instances of this in my trade. Especially if there was some 'do-it-yourself' work performed by someone previously. The polarity and existence of ground will be determined by this tester.

Hope this helps,

Jimmy
