Anyone know a QUICK way to tell the difference between speaker and instrument cables, if both cords are the same size?

1) Unscrew one connector- speaker cables have two round wires in jackets, instrument cables have on round one in a jacket, and the other wrapped around it, spread out to make the shield.

2) Look for gauge markings on the outside- speaker wire is usually 18, 16, or 12 ga.

Ill check out what you said... I know the cables are both generic brands and have absolutely NO markings on them... I just need to figure out which is which and mark them...

A speaker cable has 2 wires --- if both are 1/4" plugs one will be connected to the sleeve and one to the tip.

An instrument cable has 1 wire and a shield --- in the case of a 1/4" plug the wire is connected to the tip and the shield to the sleeve.

Never use an instrument cable in place of a speaker cable, because there is a risk of the current arcing from the sheild to the wire, even at low power conditions doing damage to the ouput stage of the amplifier.

You CAN use a speaker cable for a instrument cable --- it will just be noisy.
