Sp C1

People might hate me for saying this, but i A/B'd my C1 against my Neumann U87 with John Hardy M1 Pres. I was actually surprised how similiar the really do sound next to each other. The C1 was definately harsher in the highs and less solid in the mids and lows, but i was still really amazed at how similiar they do sound. So voices that work well on a Neumann U87 would probably work well for this mic.

But alot of people here do not like the sound of the U87 on vocals either which might be the same reason why they dont like the C1. I agree the U87 is a bit over rated and is a little bright.

But im sure all this stuff has been discussed before.

Yeah, how strange that I'm kinda missing DJL's anticipated SP- negativity here! It's just become such a regular part of these
SP threads, and now this one seems oddly empty wihout it...

I'm a big SP fan, though, and I'd suggest checking out the other current thread on "B1 and color"--which will lead you to the PMI/SP forum that discusses SP issues non-stop. Interesting stuff there if you have to plan to have some SP mics.

I concur re the U87. We did a similar thing a couple of years ago using acoustic also had a couple of other mics involved.........I must go back and listen to those tracks and see if I can pick which mic is which.

Yeah I agree that the U87 is a little bright as well. It's funny that some people want to compare these cheap chinese mics to a U87 and others claim they they sound too bright. They are both kinda right. The U87 is very overrated anyway.
 
well, i have never tried out the c1. i actually have had a chance to sing into a U87 but at the time had no appreciation for recording. so, doesn't really count. but, i for one like that really bright vocal sound. mainly on male vocals. alot of bands that i am listening to right now seem to have that feel on vocals and i really like it. probably b/c most of them were recorded with the U87.
 
What was really funny back in the day before i owned or was able to try a U87 i always listened to CDs and thought "oh thats what a U87 sounds like, i love that sound" suspecting that every vocal was done with a U87. But when i did get to use one, i learned that the U87 doesnt really sound like what i thought it would sound like :). Besides it being a little bright, i actually find it to be a pretty neutral sounding vocal mic, which is maybe why it is actually quite versatile. Well it does have a coloration, but a coloration that sounds kind of natural.

Also, i didnt mean to let this thread get to wild with the claim i had, luckily it hasnt yet. I should probably edit the last post saying that they have a similiar sound, but the U87 did everything 10 times better then the C1, but still similiar. That might be an easy way to put it.

i guess the point is that people have 200 dollars in their pocket and want a mic to sound as close as they can to what sound thier looking for. not that they are gonna choose the c1 over the U87 becuase its cheaper. they just dont have the choice to even think about the u87. or at least.....this is my standing.
