Sp C-1/c-3

I'm sorry guys, I'm in the middle of stringing up a guitar and don't have time to search the forum, and I don't want to forget to post this question (just moved and still in a frenzy). But I was hoping someone could tell me in their own experience the sonic differences between the C1 and the C3, and whether the difference in price is worth it. And I'm sure they're both excellent deals just based on the value of the VTB-1 pre's I've got. But I'm looking to upgrade from my Bheringer B2 for vocals. I'd love to only spend the money that a C1 goes for, but is the C3 worth the extra? And again, what are the sonic differences? Thanks so much!

Well really the sonic characteristics of the two are very similiar, although some people say that the C3 sounds better. They considered and basically the same microphone. The main difference between the two, is that the c3 has a cardiod, omni, and figure-8 polarity switch on it. So choosing between the two really just depends on what you need the mic for. In most cases you wont need anything except for cardiod. In most instances the omni and figure-8 are used more for orchestral recordings where the room needs to be picked up. Although of course there are other uses for the omni and f-8 but i dont think anything you are required to have. It will really depend on your own needs and your own preference of flexibility.

Why don't you email Alan Hyatt and ask him to send you the Studio Projects Sessions CD that compares the C1, C3, and T3? I was quite surprised how different the C1 and C3 sound but you may hear something different. The worst part about listening to this Sessions CD is that you'll probably want to buy a Focusrite Red 1 after you hear how awesome it sounds with the C3. I bought a C3 from 8th Street for $349.

To me, the C3 is a bit more airy on the top end...Not harsh or bright, but smooth. Good low end as well. It almost is as if the C3 has some Tube character to it.

Anyway, they are close, yet different. The C1 gets all the attention but for me the C3 is better, and it has the three patterns. If $360 is in the budget, get, or get a C1 and a Studio Projects B3 for about the same money. Now you have two mics, the C1 that you want, and the B3 is no slouch.

Now you have a stereo pair, a multi-pattern and a cardioid to experiment with M/S. The C1 is killer for vocals and overheads, the B3 is killer on drums, and acoustics, and I think it is outstanding for vocals as well. So if it was me, it would be a C1 and a B3 as long as the $360.00 was in the budget. If it comes down to only one mic for that money, it is the C3 for me, but they are going fast and we will only have 48 or so left which will sell out next week, si if it is the C3...get it now or they will be backordered until after January....
