Soundproofing.

I sense some confusion here between sound treatment (absorbtion/diffusion) and sound isolation (sound proofing with mass and airspace and isloation and other voodoo).

My drummer and I are going to be renting a house soon. We will be turning either, the garage or the 3rd bedroom into our Rehearsal/Recording room. We want to keep the sound in as much as possible so that the music won't disturb the neighbors at all. We'd like to rehearse and record as much as possible without having to worry about a call to the police for noise disturbance.

Suggestions?

We're also on a pretty low budget, so we dont mind getting creative :) .

Thanks!

Justin

I make my noise in an underground room with concrete walls and ceiling. No issues with noise outside the house. That pretty much does the trick on keeping ambient noise out and my noise in, but treating the bass modes is a pain. That's the kind of mass it takes to do the job. If you are going to do it without that kind of mass, then you need double stud walls with air gaps and similar treatments.

Cheers,

Otto

I'm sorry, but that's totally wrong. Pillows and blankets will not stop enough sound to keep your neighbors from complaining. You need mass and airspace decoupling to effectively minimize sound from escaping.

or do it the way this guy says....don't listen to me...this guy know everything....i guess nobody read the part where it says your on a budget

It's not about the budget, dipshit; it's about giving bad advice. I didn't invent the laws of physics, buddy, but I do know that pillows and blankets will not have much effect on keeping the sound from escaping, even if you cover every square inch of the walls with them.

Oh, and sign your neg rep, pussy. ;)

Has anyone priced pillows and blankets lately? They're not really all that cheap.

And what Scrubs says about mass and airspace is not only true, it's not really all that expensive, relatively speaking. Materials-wise, injection foam in an existing wall and/or staggerd wall studding on a re-built wall - you can save and re-use the current wall surface - and the like is probably not much more, if at all, expensive than a shitload of pillows and blankets. Plus it'll look a lot better, sound better internally, and not be a fire hazard.
