Soundproofing with theatre "blacks"

Hi all,

I'm a newbie, total amateur, and kind of a schmuck, so help me out here...

Mainly I'm interested in just recording my voice, reading. No instruments and nothing too loud. Rather than try to make a soundproof room in my house with stuff all over the walls, I've been thinking about creating a "space" by hanging used theatre blacks (that really, really, REALLY thick curtain that theatres use ... it's sort of velvety and heavy as hell) from the ceiling joists to create a 4' x 4' space.

My logic is that I'm not too concerned with sound getting INTO the space -- it's a pretty quiet part of the house -- and the studio blacks will keep my voice from bouncing anywhere. I've read that the key component in cheap studio audio is to try to keep everything in the room "soft" so sound won't bounce off it, and this stuff should definitely do the trick. A local theatre has some old burnt blacks that I might be able to buy off them cheap.

What do y'all think?

Thanks!

I think it will do what you want but it's gonna stink. 4' X 4'? You aren't claustraphobic are you?
