here is the problem I am facing...

whenever I try to listen to the changes for mic placement... the noise from the amplifier itself tends to get into my ears through the headphones and its not very isolated, i cannot exactly tell what i am getting through the mic since i can hear the amp very loud as well, probably since im in the same room with it...

so I want to isolate the amplifier somehow.. and I have several ideas..

1. stick the amp into my closet and sound proof it a little bit and try to close the doors(but not sure if the mic stand will fit in there with the amp.

2. leave the amp in the room but put an isolation box in front of it to quiet it down a bit.

3. sound proof my bathroom walls and keep the amp in there (although there is some glass and mirrors and tile, so it will be very reflective..

4. put the amplifier outside my room and feed cables through window, and use isolation box to keep outside noise from getting to the mic.

these ideas all seem to have issues so I am not sure what to do.. I could also put the amplifier outside of my bedroom door but there is tile there as well (probably not as reflective as the bathroom)

any ideas or sggestions? thanks.

BTW i am going to loop a clean guitar track and reamp it so I have a constant source to compare while placeing the mics.

Easiest thing for you to do, put as much distance between your amp and yourself as possible. Do you have a basement? Do you have a wireless system? Play and record from one end of the house and have the amp on the other end of the house.

As corny as it is, I use a few blankets hanging over the top of my amp (leave the back uncovered) and using a few boomless mic stands drape the blanket out about 2ft then down to the floor. I then tuck a length from the sides under the amp (sitting on top of a few other amps) so that there is no open area between the amps and the "outside" world. It's by no means "isolation" but it does solve that airy openness of just a mic in an untreated room. Great solution for someone who is unable to soundproof or treat their rooms. The biggest reason this works well for me is my tone isn't effected by volume, so I can play with the amp silly low, or silly high and get what I want, so this may or may not work in all situations. Though for me, it's darn near perfect.

Your noises in the bathroom getting a little out of control eh?

I wanted to say something similar sooooooo bad lol

I'm not sure from your original post if you are looking to add either absorbtion or isolation to your bathroom, but either is a realy poor choice. For isolation bathrooms are so full of holes (vents, pipe cutouts, etc) to make isolation a ridiculous proposition. As for absorbtion bathrooms are high moisture environments (hot water for showers, etc) that something like foam or fiberlgass is going to become a mold magnet.

The ideas of making your own amp isolation cabinet are the right way to go.

But beyond that you might just be trying too much to play AND listen for the changes in mic position at the same time.

So split the process, record multiple tracks in many mic positions, documenting which is which, and THEN just listen to them.

hmm thanks for the suggestions.. I have tried the record and document method, but I thought it would be really great to be able to listen to what mic placement affects the sound real time. Maybe I can make an isolation box for my head and put my headphones on under it... hey its not THAT stupid of an idea...

You could always try the seperate room idea, like a far room down the hall. With painters tape, you could mark off some reference points on the amp and find yourself a little helper to move the mic upon your command. Stand in your "control" room and play, listening through headphones. Stop. Ask the helper to move the mic to "B" or "2" or whatever, repeat. Girlfriends and kids come in handy for this, wives will roll their eyes. :D
