Just wanna grab your attention! :D

You see, I have hundreds of MBs worth of soundfonts, and I love them all (most of them, ecpesially GoldDrums  ). As most of you know, it's more than 6 months ago I threw the Shitblaster out of my computer, smashed it on a brick wall and lived happily ever after. Long live Livesynt Pro DXi! :)

Well.... with the Audigy/Live! I could use a program to "preview" the soundfont, so I didn't have to guess which was which, and load them up in Sonar, just to discover it was the wrong sfont.

Now, is there a software-based Soundfontplayer that doesen't require a SB-card?

unforunatelly there isn't (yet). I've looked here and there also about how to preview / edit SF without using Creative's card. It can't be done. So you can't do preview / edit SoundFont without them. Using LiveSynth Pro DXi helps you alot playback SF, but it did that in DXi host application (SONAR, etc...). Here's some info...

it said there...

...There is one drawback to using the LiveSynth DXi. Without a SoundFont-compatible sound card, you can't edit SoundFonts. I believe LiveUpdate is working on a SoundFont editor of their own to solve this very problem (I'll have more information on this in the near future).

Dammit! I was affraid of that. I've been using Livesynth Pro DXi for quite some time now, and I'm waiting for VSampler 3 (it can create Soundfounts :D, right BluesMeister?).

I just figured since there's a standalone player (regular Livesynth Pro), it can't be a long way to "preview" soundfonts... but noooo.

SoundFonts & VS3

Hi Moskus,

VSampler 3 (it can create Soundfounts , right BluesMeister?).
I have absolutely no idea :) With the final released and registered version I've no doubt that it will be possible to save under different formats such as SF2. Since it is a sampler I would say almost certainly YES, you can create SFs. I think VS2.75 can save in SF2 format already.

There is now a SoundFont editor that doesn't require a SB card, I think I read about it on the LiveSynth site perhaps?

VS3 will preview your soundfonts using a virtual keyboard. It's only a matter of dragging the SF into a vacant slot and running your mouse pointer over the virtual keyboard.

I think this what you might be looking for...
SoundFaction - Alive . According to the requirements:
Requirements
Pentium or higher
64MB RAM
800x600 Display
A Soundfont compatible device (for auditioning), such as the Audigy, SBLive or other Emu or Creative Labs card with Soundfont support. Alternatively use a soft-synth from LiveUpdate for Cakewalk SONAR
Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2k/XP
I haven't tried it, but...
Hope this helps...

I have emailed SoundFaction to check. I will post my results...

Yeah, I know, that's why I emailed the company. The requirements made it sound that you didn't need the SB-card. At least that's how I read it. It won't be the first time I have been wrong and it won't be the last, I'm sure...

Audio Compositor

You can preview soundfonts without having a soundblaster card in a program called Audio Compositor. I bought it about 3 years ago. It works great. They have made several free updates since then.

I was using SB Live! at the time, but I was always getting these clicks when I rendered out to a wave file when I was using Pro Audio 9. With Audio Compositor, you can read any soundfont, import you midi file, and it will convert the midi file to a wave file from the soundfont loaded.

It has many other features and a free demo. Check it out here:

Ahhh... now I see. You still have to open every file you want to check out. I was thinking about something that would work as SFexplorer...

But it looks like a great program! Now you can create soundfonts without a SB-card! Whoho! This got to be great news for Alan. :)

Hmm...must check out this sound font thingy. I know nothing about them but they sure sound like they may be useful.

Yeah, I'm a noob. :D

Good info on this. Thanks

Ok, here is my exchange with SoundFaction...

Alternatively use a soft-synth from LiveUpdate <http://www.liveupdate.com/> for Cakewalk SONAR Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2k/XP

Does this mean that I can use a different soundcard, say, a Delta 1010?

Thank you,

Kevin Harris

This is their reply:

Yes - if you use Cakewalk SONAR as your sequencer - LiveSYnth offers a very
effective alternative to soundfont hardware - supporting any soundcard that
Cakewalk SONAR supports.

> Does this mean that I can use a different soundcard, say, a Delta 1010?
You'd need to check with Cakewalk, but I'm pretty sure any 16 bit 44khz
stereo capable soundcard will work fine.

I think this answers the question, right? Hope this helped...

I allready use the LiveSynth Pro DXi. No problems with soundfonts-playback.

BUT I over 1 gig worth of soundfonts. I want to pre-hear them as I could with my SB Live! and Audigy using SFexplorer which made my life easier in the old days (when I used SB-cards...)

Moskus, the program I am referring to Alive is what I think you are looking for. It's compatible with Livesynth. It allows you to audition your soundfonts... If this is not, please explain to me what I'm not understanding...
I could be confused :p

Ooops, sorry 'bout that.

Will test now it now...

Here's my DRUMS Soundfont setting...

To all GoldDrums fans!

Have you checked out Sonic Implants Blue Jay Drums? It's great! You'll find it on the Sonar 2 CD. :)

That's true moskus... the picollo snare of Blue Jay is crunchiest I've ever heard. Suitable for funk groove... It's worth in the CD...

...You see, four of my -must have- Soundfonts for drums are :

GoldDrums (bank 3)
Blue Jay (bank4)
Super Real Drum (aka. Evandro DRM) (bank 5)
Drums Douglas Natural Studio Kit V.2 (bank 9)

;) ;) ;)
