Soundfont frustration

Why do some soundfonts work, but not others? I have downloaded several drum soundfonts; only one actually comes up in the Banks dropdown list (and, to my ears, sounds no different than the original cheesy session drummer track). Other drum soundfonts attach OK, but do not show up in Track Properties at all. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

I have tried everything suggested here. It all works, up to the point in Track Properties where I must choose Bank. The ONLY bank available to me is "none".

Relax, SOWM :)
We'll help you out :)
Now, what's your soundcard ? (Live!, Audigy, Audigy2 ?)
What driver do you use ?
What version your Cakewalk ?
What's your OS ?
How did you play soundfonts ? (regular creative's way, Livesytnh Pro, VSampler ?)
What soundfonts do you use ?
If possible, describe us how did you set it up :)

I have a similar problem. I can get the soundfonts to work, but only when I take them out of their folders and place them on the desktop. I must also "attach” them every time I start the computer. If they aren’t on the desktop, my Home Studio won’t find them.

This morning, after reading this post I got the idea that I could maybe correct the problem. So I went to one of my songs and tried to fix it. This time I left the soundfonts in a folder within a folder in my “document” section in the computer. When I got done, the “banks” dropdown was empty. The computer was giving me a message that the “path does not exist” (to the soundfonts).

I have a SoundBlaster Audigy Mp3 card
Home Studio XL
Windows XP Home

Here's the scoop, James:
Soundcard: SB Live! Value
Drivers: ctsyn.vxd, mmdevldr.vxd
CW: Pro Audio 9
OS: Win98
How did I play: not sure I understand the question. I go to Options/Soundfonts and attach the sf2 file, then go to Track Properties and set up the MIDI Port, and TRY to set the Bank and the Patch.
Soundfonts: I've tried Drums (402KB).sf2 and Acoustic Drum Set (2,613KB).sf2, both from www.thesoundsite.net, and also PC Drums 42a.sf2, which I got from another site. The only one that works (sort of) is Drums (402KB).sf2.

You didn't ask, but my system specs are: P3 @ 450 Mhz, 128 Mb RAM. My Soundfont cache is set as high as it'll go at 63.50 Mb.

If you can shed any light on this I'll be most grateful.

Okay... I don't know any of those sets, except Drums42a.sf2 which I didn't get to work with my old Audigy. Maybe you could download a set that we all know should work, like the beautifull GoldDrums... :)

Ugh, excuse me, I'm out of town now (not at my DAW). I'll be here in Monday :)

I tried it again with a New project and it works just fine. Home Studio XL finds the soundfonts with no trouble. But how do I get it to find soundfonts in an old project?
