I have read two articles about recording a choir in Sound-on-sound and they have use Soundfield mics. Looks like this mic is about $6000 retail, or $4500 on sale. I'm interested in knowing if anybody has actually used one of these mics, or knows what this mic can do recording a choir that a well-placed set of SD or LD coincident mics cannot do.
I'm looking at recording several church choirs in the near future and I'm considering using an ORTF configuration with two MXL603s, or even NT5s. One of the articles also mentioned the use of two outer mics to reinforce sound from the outer extremes of the choir if the center-placed stereo-configuration does not pick up enough sound. This sounds pretty good to me. There will also be a piano or sometimes an organ.
Any pointers on micing a pipe organ?
