Hi, does anyone here use a soundcraft mixer? I'm curious, there's so much rumour about them being such good quality, and great preamps. Anyway, I'd like to hear first hand from anyone who uses one, and what they use it with (and any mp3s if they're going :))

Cheers guys

I just got a soundcraft folio notepad mixer the other week (very small...but not bad.) Comparing it to the behringer ub802, I think it is better...better preamps mainly and its supposed to be more reliable. I haven't had much experiance with different mixers though...just a behringer and the soundcraft one. In the end I went for the soundcraft because it was only about $50 more expensive and I think its worth forking out a little more. I did lots of research before purchasing, so i'd say for the money soundcraft is the way to go (just my opinion though.)

They arent GREAT preamps. However, they are pretty good for a cheap board.

Obviously any other suggestions would be welcome :) I'm looking for a mixer in that kind of price range, and obviously preamps and AD converters etc are very important.

Incidently, I'm talking more about the M12 kind of mixer rather than a small notepad one.

Yeah...good for the money. You basically get what you pay for, so I didn't expect amazing quality from something I only paid $100 for! What price range are you talking about anyway Canopus? M12s go for around $500 new!! The spirit range seem to be cheaper.

Canopus,

I have the Spirit M12 that I like very much. The 100mm faders all around make it a nice feel, east to operate. The pre's sound warm. If you in the under $1K price range, also check out the Allen & Heath mix wizards. Those pre's have a good reputation plus you get digital fx.

What type of stuff do you intend to record ?

Indie-rock, including drums, so I need several inputs

If you want a board under $1000...look at the Soundcraft M Series and the Allen & Heath mixwizards. You can do searches and see this same theme over and over again.

I recently bought a Spirit Folio SX - 12 pres / inserts + four stereo channels and eight DIRs. I had a Behringer mixer before that(mx1604a), and the improvement is quite astonishing. It is possibly the ugliest mixer ever made, however. Got it for app. 500$(4000 swedish). I would recommend it!

Cheers. Do any of you guys have any examples of the sound you got from it? I'd love to hear. Thanks :D

I have a Soundcraft Live 8 channel and would not trade it. The preamps are slightly warm but very clear. I run out the computer and through the board when I am trying to take the digital edge off a track or song. It is perfect for drums and bass/guitar direct stuff.

I do not use it on vocals just instruments although it produces useable background vocals. The M series are quite good too especially with the A/D card built in.

Under $1000 I would opt for Soundcraft or Allen Heath.

well..I'm not a monster-engineer, but this is a sample of a song tracked through my SX mixer, no external pres. It's acoustic though, and the mp3 encoding isn't very good I'm afraid.
Never the less.
Mics: ADK sc-1 & an sm57.
Perhaps not very representative, but you asked for it! :D

I have a Soundcraft Ghost with the MIDI Mute automation. I would recommend this board anyone, and have. The preamps are not the best but they are better than anything in this price range. In addition, nothing even comes close to the EQ section of the board either (in the price range). You will not be sorry with the boards ‘sound” and performance.

The board is designed and built with each channel as a separate module, unlike others that just have 1 large circuit card. This means that should a channel ever go down, you can simply remove that channel’s module (send for repair) and still have us of the board.

Another nice feature is the MIDI capability of the board. I control an HD24 right from the desk.

Wish I could afford a Ghost :( Oh well, hopefully a spirit would do the job :) Have you got any .mp3s ?
