So is it OK to post covers there?

I thought they didn't allow it, but I see lots of them there.
 
I had that same question when I first registered. I decided to take my chances. Every song I've posted there has been a cover, and I aint been sued yet. :rolleyes:
 
The last I checked (few months back) you could upload covers on there ONLY if you had permission from the copyright holder. Now, of course, I doubt ANY of those covers up there have that permission...and I'm not sure how..or if..Soundclick checks on it.
 
They've probably got that there to cover their butts in case some artist/publishing company sues them.

As far as I understand (I posted a few covers) if you don't have a copyright you can still post covers as long as you set the genre to "Cover Songs" under rock or blues or whatever. That's what I do, is that correct?

Take a look at A Real Persons page...he has about 700 covers up... :D
 
Yes, you can have covers there if you put them in the cover section of the genre that you're playing. And to if SC checks to see if people are getting permission, NO!

I had one song of mine used by a beat / hip hop guy without my permission or even a 'Can I use this song?'. He was then allowing downloads of the piece which is where I got pissed off. One little letter to him and he removed the download option.

Soundclick has decided that the artists should take care of all the copyright legal issues between themselves. Yeah, right. They really think that all these people who are putting covers up get permission from the copyright holders. I'm surprised that they're still in business.

That's why it's still better to Copyright your original stuff before you put it up. At least then you'd have some legal recourse.
I've done a couple cover tunes, but I never posted them there because I didn't do them justice.

Oh, but I do copyright all my music before I post them anywhere. So if I wanted to be a real hard a**, I could have maybe done something. But I'm not that kind of person. All I asked of the guy was to take the download option off so I could at least keep some control over how my music is being used.

As I see it, I blame SC for their blatant disregard of artists intellectual property. They are the ones who are transmitting the songs from their site, so their the ones who should be held accountable for copyright infringement. They even allow cover songs to be sold from their site. Wonder if HFA is even aware of it. Probably, but from what I hear, people aren't selling to many downloads from there.

While I agree with your point on retaining control over your material, I disagree with your opinion on how SC should handle it.

I don't allow the download option on my songs. Not because I have some great musical marvels that people will be able to take with them but because I don't really consider them complete. I guess once I'm ready to put them on a CD I'd consider them complete and anyone who wants a free copy can then download. Or ask me for a free copy.

But SC has no freakin' way of determining if you're posting a cover without permission. Especially if you don't tell them it's a cover. I mean they're going to have to put some team in charge that has, collectively, heard almost all the songs to be able to identify. On the other hand we could be jerks and turn in our fellow musicians saying they're posting covers without permissions. But seriously, that would be too much. I kinda like sites like SC that allow us to get our music out there where everyone can post for free without worrying about web storage and even get some publicity. :)

Not trying to piss you off, just offering another opinion.
