I think I am going to sound stupid but thats why I am on this forum.
I have been reading a while and stil have not found an answer to a couple of my Q's.
First off I just got a new computer and I am dedicating it to recording. As of yet I do not have a sound card but I am looking into getting one. I would like to record guitar vocals drums and other more exotic instruments. (i.e. Jimba, Conga, Digerido, a peice of wood)

First off what do you suggest in way of sound cards and second, why are there 6 outputs for only 4 inputs on a lot of suondcards?

I know that You plug monitors into some of the outs but what else. This is all for my project hoe recording studio

The M-Audio cards are very widely used and recommended. Look at the Audiophile and the Delta 44, 66, 1010. I have the 44. They're the best for the money in my opinon!

Different outputs depend on your setup. Monitors, heaphones, mixers ad external recording equipment are all uses depending on your needs.

Thank you,
just out of curriosity (it might be of help to me.) what kind of setups do some of you use?

I've got a Yamaha MG12/4 mixer into a Delta 44, recorded/mixed with Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro

i'm running a behringer UB1204 (soon to be replaced by a couple of dedicated pres) into my delta 44. my plan is to get a DMP-3 for my main two channels of input, and use the mixer for the other two. i bring one pair of outs straight back to the same mixer and send it to headphones and monitors from there.
