Soundcards with S/PDIF and AES/EBU ins...

Since I cant get the S/PDIF from my MMP-2 and 2496 working, I have to either find another way to connect them, or buy a new sound card (which I really dont want to do)

What soundcards should I look into when using my MMP-2?

It has XLR, Digital coax, and AES/EBU outs...

I know this topic has been touched on all over this site, but Im still not sure if the MMP-2 has a problem with the Digital coax out, the 2496, or if it has a problem working with computer soundcards in general...

Any thoughts on either subject...?

I believe that a RME Digi96/8PAD or a 9632 would allow simultaneous S/pdif and AES i/o, if you get the optional digital breakout cable (must be 40 bucks).

The new Emu cards appear to support both standards, though I don't think it'll be simultaneous.

Back with some updated info: german Marian makes a model called Marc Pro 2 with 1 s/pdif, 1 AES/EBU and wordclock. Pricing is fair if compared to RME, which on the other hand is state of the art for home and project studios.

Another option that intrigues me a lot is getting a digital patchbay. I found out that Hoontech is making such a thingy that will allow you to plug up to 6 s/pdif and 6 AES/EBU. If I got it right you can then route one of the up to 12 devices to your converters or soundcard. Dunno how good it handles conversions and jitters....

again, anyone?
 
Let me say right now that you really need to fix the problem on the MMP-2 end of things. I thought a new sound card would fix the problem myself...that's why I have an Emu 1820 now and I'm selling my Audiophile. And as I mentioned before, an Mbox, a DAT, and a full fledged Pro Tools didn't like the SPDIF.

it didn't fix my MMP-2, though. Fix the MMP-2, not the sound card.

Of course, if you really want to get a new soundcard with an AES/EBU, who am I to stop you...
 
I share Sklathill's thoughts. I use the spdif on my audiophile all the time, more than the analog i/o and it works pretty much flawlessly. The problem may not be on the receiving end.
Mother of all questions: Do you use proper coax cables?
 
Its apparent that its not the receiving end, as Im not the only one with the problem.

I called Roland and they were a "big" help :(

As for cables, Yep. 75ohm digital audio cables...

I really wanted to get to play with the MMP-2. This whole thing, has really frustrated me.

So The MMP-2 basically wont work with ANY computer soundcards or what? And its suppose to be a PC oriented PRE...

aagghhh....

Now Im back to square one...
 
Have you tried altering the frequency of the digital output on the MMP-2? (44.1,48,88.2,96kHz)

Press the "System" button - then adjust the third black knob (rightmost).

In theory the MMP-2 setting should match your sound card's digital sampling rate.

I use a MMP-2 into a Roalnd M-1000 mixer into USB or Echo Mia SP/DIF input - works fine.
 
Now I wish I would have gone with the Echo Mia...

Can you run it straight into the Echo Mia? How is the sound of that combination...?

Yeah, Ive tried every frequency, 44.1-96khz on both the Roland and the 2496 and still no go...
