I'm in need of a sound card that has 7.1 surround, coax in/out, optical in/out (not needed but preferred), support for DVD audio, and one that won't lose signal while travelling from coax out to a home theatre receiver. Any suggestions?

Doesn't exist.

Only the SB Audigy2 supports DVD-A but its 7.1 outputs are analog. It doesn't encode 7.1 and send it through SPDIF.

The only soundcard capable of encoding 5.1 DD ans sending it to an external decoder/receiver via TOSLINK is the Soundstorm onboard sound found on nForce2 motherboards.

So I can't send a digital 7.1 signal through coax?

TOSLINK and coax (orange plug) are both digital connections that send the compressed 5.1 or 7.1 signal to a Dolby Digital receiver.

The Audigy 2 outputs 6 or 8 analog signals to an external receiver which would have to have inputs for each channel rather than the single TOSLINK or coax digital input.

At the bottom of the page it states the I/O ports of the card. It says that it has coax in/out so it would work right?

Its true SPDIF, not the compressed AC3 format used for Dolby Digital. Its only a digital stereo output in this case. Do yourself a favor and go to www.avsforum.com. Go to the Home Theatre PC forum and read up on what current soundcards can and cannot do.
