Soundcard needed in addition to Firewire?

I'm brand new to home recording and building my first PC. I'm building a new core 2 duo PC for home recording and had a question on audio playback. I was hoping to buy a firewire interface like the ONYX 400f or Presonus Firepod. Will I need a soundcard in the PC to playback the audio, or will this go back through the firewire interface?

I was thinking about getting the ASUS P5B Deluxe mobo which has one 1394a, would there be any reason for more than one firewire interface (not including daisy-chaining 400f's or something).

Oh... and if I do need a soundcard in the PC for playback, anyone have a recommendation under $200?

Thanks in advance for the advice, and hooray for these forums =)

everything will be via the firewire interface so nothing else is needed. Those core 2's look wonderful though, post your results.

One thing to check is what firewire chipset comes with the mainboard. If its not a TI chipset, your probably better off adding a PCI-E adaptec interface since firewire interfaces can be pretty particular about what firewire chipsets will work

PCI-E is the next big thing, but if your mobo has PCI slots a PCI firewire card will do just fine too. The PCI bus is still significantly faster than the max of the firewire card anyway.

BTW, if you don't need 8 simultaneous preamps, the Onyx is a much better device. Not slamming the Firepod, just saying that it doesn't quite stand up to the Mackie in overall quality. I've owned both, and still own some Presonus hardware (Digimax) too...

PCI will be fine. Check whatever manufactures website for compatible firewire cards for what ever interface you go with. Adaptec seems to be on everyones list so thats why i recommend it
