soundcard input

I have been doing a little recording but the only way I can get my pc to record is to go thru the headphone input on the soundcard. Doesnt sound very good. I cant get it to record going thru the regular input. Any ideas? I am using a factory soundcard so it is not the best card I am sure.

are you sure your going through the headphone input and not the mic input? if you are absolutely positive then your card seems to be messed up so it'd do ya best to buy another one

gwayms, did you make sure that you are inputting through the LINE IN, and not the MIC IN.

Yeah, the only way I can get my guitar or a microphone to record
is to go into the mic input on the soundcard. When I try to go thru the input I get nothing. I also just bought a keyboard but I cant get anything from it. I am sure I need a different connection. I am not sure what the other type are of connections are called. Not the regular 1/4" but the microphone type connections.
