Soundcard - how many I/O do you really need?

I am currently using a SB Live! Value. So far I see it fits my need, as I am just recording guitar, bass and vocals and one instrument at a time.

I am looking into upgrading my soundcard to a more "pro" one that has more input, digital I/O and better convertor (like the Hoontech ones, as they are pretty reasonable.)

Some of the higher end soundcard comes with 8 I/O, but do I really need that many if I don't record drum?
what are the things I should consider to determine how many I/O do I really need?

Thanks!

"what are the things I should consider to determine how many I/O do I really need?"

You should consider the number of tracks you want to record simultaneously. If you're recording drums live and want a separate track for each mic then you'd want at least 3 or 4 inputs. For your situation I would recommend a Delta 44 or 66 (depending if you want S/PDIF) - this would give you 4 ins/outs and pretty high quality convertors.

There are also a bunch a people selling gadgetlabs for cheap these days..but of course there's a downside to that. IMO they sound better than delta.

The downside being driver support is nada.....

and since i just realized he said he wanted "pro" sounding converters, i would consider neither Gadgetlabs or Delta as "pro"....

here comes the mob...gotta go...

wow

Gidge,
you mean the Delta is not a "pro" enough soundcard?
what is then??

honestly I think the Delta is over my budget at the moment.... I can afford something around US150.

maybe I'll save up and stick with my SB Live......

well, i think the word pro is thrown around way toomuch...when I think pro, im thinking as good as a commercial CD....im thinking dedicated converters (lucid?apogee?)....it wont be done with your budget.....now a delta audiophile at 159 US will blow away your SBLive as will the Delta44 at a little over 200 US....id consider them pro-sumer......

Of course you could score a Gadget Labs card pretty cheap...and they are damn good cards...but like I said, driver support will be nada.....
