Hello. I'm looking for a soundcard for under $120. I'm pretty sure anything you suggest would be better than what I have now so don't be afraid to recommend something less than great.

I've been looking at the Creative Labs Emu 0404. It looks like what I'm looking for but I have heard some bad things... Not sure if it's a common issue or if people just don't know what they're talking about.

I will mainly be using the card for audio recording but I will also be using it for MIDI.

Do any of you have suggestions?

I forgot that I had another question...

Is it possible to have two soundcards set up on one computer? The reason I ask is because I recently put my old soundcard into my new computer and it totally disabled the stock one. It's not even in the device tree. If I uninstall the one I added, will the other one come back? I don't really need the other one, I'm just curious.

Thanks.

That is purely up to the individual soundcard. Usually if you put in another standard soundcard, it will disable the stock unit. But I have heard of people stacking cards. I would not bother with that. You can pick up a new EMU 2496 for about $100 bucks. I would at least try to scrape another $30 together and go for the M Audio Delta 44 though for $150.

The MAudio Firewire Audiophile 2496 looks amazing! I think that's what I'm looking for. I'll have to sell some more stuff (Xbox) but it will be worth it, I think. Thanks for the input!

It is pretty cool. Just remember that it has no preamps, if that matters to you.

Sure. It may work fine, it may not. Either way, you will not be able to use both at once. I use the stock card on mine for windows sounds etc and my main card for recording. Have not had any problems.

One nice thing about the emu is the ADAT interface so adding on to it later is a snap

get the m-audio audiophile 2496 pci. I haven't used the firewire version, but i know the pci is good.

I recommend the M-Audio Audiophile 2496. It is worlds better than a soundblaster audigy, and you can add another M-Audio Delta series card (1010LT) for example, and use them both together in your audio app.
