Hi, Ive got a 900Mhz P3 Hewlett Packard running on WinME. I use an external hard disk recorder (DPS16). I am looking for a sound card that has SPDIF connections. SO I can just go computer to recorder without any lose of sound quality.

Was wondering if anyone has this kind of setup and what they use for a sound card. And does it matter how good the card is, if I am going the SPDIF route? Soundcards is not my forte. Thanks.

PS I am on a budget.

while I wait for someone to reply to my post...

why dont you try a rme card, their quality is very good and the card is cheap (xvisionaudio.com), they specialize in that stuff.

Do I need 2 cables for the digital connections. My Akai DPS16 has an in and out. The sound card I think I am going to get is the M-Audio for 89.00. I just need to know for what I am doing do I have to go out of the soundcard, into the DPS with one cable or do I use both in/outs.

unless Im wrong here...

you should only need one cable for in and one for out. most card just have one input and one output on spdif, so one cable in and one cable out. Take gridges advice on the card (very good deal) you wont be sorry. If you need further advice, Email those guys at the store they will get you all the cables and stuff you need.

oopps let me add

if all you want to do is send data in you need one cable, which is what I thought you were going to do. then once inside the computer, burn a CD. Are you planning on buying software to edit, or do you already own software?

as Ham Slam stated, 1 cable....youll need a 75ohm coaxial cable that pretty much is the same as your cable tv wire if u have it.....the 1 wire will transfer stereo data signals.....

Actually, what Im doing is dumping my audio data from my looping software, into my external hard disk recorder. I burn cds from my recorder.
With this information, I still only need one cable. Right?

Dang it! I just bought the card, and wanted to wait to buy the cables cause I wasnt sure what to get. I could of just ordered the cable with the card. I dont want to order again, Ill have to pay shipping twice. How much are these cables at radio shack? Or is that a bad idea?

OOHH your going from the computer to the external recorder, Im not sure if that will work. hopfully gridge can help you there. but if you go computer to recorder you will only need one cable.

I think the only thing you have to do is make sure that when you export the audio, that it is in the format that your recorder will accept. I believe while in the computer convert the audio to a wav. file then export on a single, radio shack cable to the recorder.
