Hi.
Are there any disadvantages in using an off-the-shelf Soundcard midi cable, rather than a Midiman Sport USB interface (or similar?)

Would the Yamaha UX16 USB/Midi cable be any better?

16 midi channels is plenty for me.
Are the soundcard cables opto-isolated? and is this necessary?

Hope someone can help me, as the price difference is a lot.
Thanks
Simon

I meant .....

I have a Soundblaster Live card that obviously has a 15 pin Joystick/Midi port.
I need to get midi in and out of the PC.
I can buy a Soundcard midi cable for a few dollars.
I could also buy a USB Midi Interface for heaps.

I gather the Midiman Sport 2 (2 in 2 out) will support more than 16 midi channels.
I don't need that.

I gather the Midiman Sport 2 is opto-isolated.
Is the souncard cable opto-isolated too?
Is this desirable?

Why do I need an expensive interface if a Soundcard midi cable will do the job?

What are the disadvantages, if any, of using a Soundcard Midi Cable (other than only supporting 16 channels)

Either is fine and there aren't really data quality issues for any applications I can think of.

I ended up getting both, one for my keyboard and one for my V-Amp. I got tired of switching around the cord. Now I run one into the joystick port and the other into the USB.

The Midiman is a little expensive ($70 US) for an adapter but I don't think you'll find a midi.usb cable. I couldn't.
