Has anyone had experience with the Soundblaster ct4170? Is it any good, will an LR Baggs mic/pickup/preamp work when plugged into the mic jack on the soundcard??.

I can't say never had experience of that mike/preamp. You should just try it anyway, making sure that your soundcard/properties/recording has been set to selected for mike by checking the box under mike. If you are using a preamp with a mike you would input to the line in and not mike in.

By the way your sound card is normally called a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Vibra 16.

You can get an okay sound with the SB card. You'll probably want to upgrade to a better card after a while, but it'll give you a good start into computer recording.

Do not not not use the mic in on the card. The preamp is designed for the non-critical sound of cheapie computer mics and will sound like crap. If the LR Baggs puts out a line-level signal, use the card's line-in jack. If not, get a seperate preamp. Anything is bound to be better than the cards preamp on the mic-in.

A BETTER SOUNDCARD

Can you suggest a better soundcard than the Soundblaster 16??

I think any card designed for recording is going to sound better than the SB. There are plenty of choices out there, and a search in this forum should bring up lots of results. There are other factors involved in choosing, like how you work, what other gear you'll be using, how many inputs and outputs you'll need, and the list can go on.

If you're new to computer recording in general, I'd suggest you stick with the soundblaster for a bit to get your feet wet. That way, when you go to spend a few bucks on a better card you'll have a pretty good idea of what you want and need out of the more expensive card.
