Ok, here's the thing, me and a few friends start up a band, the guy with the drums has been playing for like 10 years now and he is MADD... Besides that, were playing in a small room in my basement... He has a full drum set and it tends to get really REALLY REALLY loud in there. We were wondering if there is any way to dampen the sound, make the sound smaller without actually touching the drums? I heard egg carton's on the wall's work but I want some advice from you guy's! Thanks.

Egg Cartons will tone down the high end a little bit. Other things will work better like high density fiberglass will help tame the really harsh high end and such, but it will not really make the much more quiet. You should think about building a plexiglass cage around the drummer. Its a trick that works prettty well in live situations.

If your room is really small none of these will fix your problem, but they will help a little bit.

mel - ronan made good suggestions.
in addition heres a further idea. take the kik out and replace it with a drum trigger (you can make one for a buck using flat piezo's. ) ive made many.
put triggers on the toms, snare and kik(replace) . triggers then trigger drum sounds in a sampler which you record.
the advantages are several.
1. need fewer mics on drums. 2 ohds maybe.
2. you get a better more controlled drum sound. as you can get nice drum samples off drum sample cd's.
3. you can change the drum sound anyway you want it.
just an idea to help.
