You do it like any other sound-on-sound recording except with a DAW.

Sound on Sound

Sound on sound is simply that; sound on top of other sound.

Let's assume that you are recording to a computer at 44.1kHz and 16 bits. The 'signal' is 'sampled' at the rate of 44,100 per second at a depth of sixteen units. This is recorded as a series of (usually) binary or hexidecimal codes on your computer's hard drive. This code can later be translated in reverse, to approximate the amplitude, frequency, and phase of the original signal. In the case of tape, the 'signal' would be modulated with a supersonic frequency and deposited via magnetic induction onto a reel of ribbon which has been impregnated with sub-magnetic particles which are held in place by a thin substrate. We shall heretofore refer to this technique of capturing a signal onto a medium for later recall 'recording.'

'Bouncing' a track is when you literally 'bounce' a track from one area of tape or digital multitrack to another area or track. To do this, one would have to record enable one track of a multitrack recording device and route a play channel from that same device into the track that will record. This simply passes the signal from one channel to the next, usually through a preamplifier, modulator, D/A, demodulator, and/or anything that is in the signal chain between the playback channel and the record channel. The imperfections of the devices between the playback channel and record channel introduce artifacts and noise into the signal. This is called 'generation loss' (see your other post.)

Sound on sound is basically introducing some new form of modulation or additive/subtractive signal into the signal chain while 'bouncing' one or more tracks to a new track. It is believed that Chet Atkins was the forefather of Sound on Sound recording, starting with two vinyl record lathes; cutting each track combined with the previous track to a whole new record album until he believed that he was finished. The evolution of tape machines further propogated this technique into widespread use.

I'm thinking you meant Les Paul.

I'm also starting to think you are walters, making up this dimwit to give you a chance to post gobs of hyper-dork lingo.

walters is your shattered innocence, which was violated by too many articles about hexadecimals.

He comes out while you sleep.

Do you wake up tired, with fingers sore from typing?

I myself would like to hear how you sound on sound with your DAWL?to sound on sound how?

2.) Sound on Sound it to STACK the layers on top of tracks so its different

First you must lay down one track?another then and stack until layers?you have a nice, fat track sound on sound with? Top tracks layered sound DAW? Effects the hearing of others think it not so for layering?

3.) Sound on sound is like superimposing tracks?
Superimposing of tracks sound on sound like?

4.) Is sound on sound different than Bouncing tracks?
Bouncing tracks different sound on sound back?

Glad someone catching on..

Sorry, not Walters

I'm most certainly not Walters. I type like 80wpm in a manic frenzy so it only takes me a few min. to do a letter like that. I make it all up as I go along.

I have been kind of 'violated' but not by warm, friendly hexidecimal equations but by monkey-like people who don't know how to just be nice.

Everyone everywhere is spending waaay too much time either:

1) Struggling to screw 1,000 people out of $10 a piece
2) Jacking off to internet porn
3) Making sure everyone likes them, then screwing them out of $10 a piece
4) Marrying rich, or insulting someone who doesn't look exactly like they have the perfect Hollywood-like mating genome.

And now you have been thought to be Walters...that is a bad rap....sorry...

Don't worry

I wasn't mad at you. I just like to babble (when I'm not listening to something)

Northsiderap is the man we all want to be like this

He master his craft i could never be northsiderap he is well read and

has experience and the most of all he is nice to take time and give

out information which is a major plus because most people aren't like that.

The sound on sound is a form of Stacking Modulation Frequencys or something to make it STACK ontop of pre-recorded audio.

Bouncing would be like mixing or Adding it together not really STACKing it

i would think my thoughts

My DAW doesn't give me the option to do sound on sound if i record

on track#1 and try to record another sound ontop of it it just erases it

i know back on the reel to reels sound on sound it had a FOURTH HEAD

for sound on sound feature

or am i doing something wrong?

Sound on Sound

Just route the track you wish to record onto out into a mixer and mix in the track you are playing along with it back into your DAW on a different channel.

It was Les Paul. I've head the song that he first used that technique on. It's pretty cool. He did percussion by slapping the body of the guitar. Cut the parts that he wanted the loudest last. Genius.

Thanks Northsiderap your the best

Yea les paul invented sound on sound before multi track recorders

and his albums sound different than multi track overdubbing

because he is doing sound on sound overdubbing

sound way different to me

Hey wally. I've got something for you, wanna guess what it is? We could keep this up forever you know. I can assure you that I have the patience and perseverance to outlast your puberty. It's up to you though little one.

OK, will the purpetrator behind this farce and the other Engrish speaking usernames please just knock it off? This is getting old and isn't fun anymore...
