Sound of Joan Jett/Gary Glitter Drums

Does anyone have any idea how to achieve the drum sound on Joan Jetts first couple albums, or Gary Glitters? They seem to have a similar low end to them. When I searched around online for any information, I could only find a hint from Joan Jett who stated that they did not use any compression on the drums. I wasn't sure if I should post this in the drum section or not, but it seemed to be more of a recording question.
 
Post up a couple of clips that have the exact drum sound you are after....it might make it easier for folks to give you tips instead of having them find their own clips (which may not be what you are after). :)
 
Those drum sounds are pretty dead and dry. Like, really dead. Coated batter heads and no resonant heads. Clear 2-ply snare heads tuned to a medium tone. Overdub and layer thick handclaps with each snare hit.

I know many of the songs.... :cool: ...but there were a lot of songs, and I'm not honestly sure if the drum sound was always the same, song after song, album after album.

In the olden days, every drummer I played with used to put duct tape on their heads. No idea if it mattered - we never recorded it. :D

If the mic has a "pad" switch, use it when recording drums. Always better to pad at the mic than the console. Thanks.
