Is there such a thing that plays midi files into the pa? Not a keyboard. A sound module ?

A laptop.

Most bands that use synths have a laptop set up on their keyboard/synth stand along with an interface or whatever they need to output to 1/4 analog to the PA.

"output to 1/4 analog to the PA" - - what does this mean ? ?

MIDI is a digital signal. Anything you're going to hear out of a PA is going to be from an analog signal. MIDI does not produce sound, but only transfers a digital notation to a host, which will apply it to the designated virtual instrument, therefore producing an analog output that produces sound. This output would then be sent to the PA, using 1/4 instrument cables in either stereo (L and R mono) or single mono.

The only way I know of that can take a MIDI signal and apply it to an instrument is by computer. You will then need an interface with outputs that can be sent to the PA.

Basically, it'd work like this:

MIDI Controller (Your MIDI "instrument") output > MIDI input of interface > firewire into laptop > Reason or whatever MIDI program/plugin you use > main outs of interface L and R to PA, where channels should be hard panned L and R

OK thx. I'd like to be able to use some midi files in the background of the band's live performance and tryig to figure out the simplest way to do it. I've had an Ipod & mini disk player recommended. I have to be able to send a click track to the drummer's monitor too. I don't knwo exactly what I'm doing.

I'm also going to record some rhythm guitar tracks & a click track to play in a 3 piece band - bought a Boss BR-1200 digital recorder & need to figure that out too and how I'm going to get that to the pa.

Got too much going on.

If you are not planning on actually performing using MIDI, and only wish to play it back, just record the MIDI and export the file as you would an audio recording. It will no longer be a "MIDI file:, but a WAV or whatever you exported it as. Burn it to a CD or put it on your MP3 player as you would any audio recording and hook it up to the PA.

a WAV is a WAV, regardless of what medium was used to record it.

I'm sorry if I confused you.
