Just wanted to share with you glory of making recording in SF with DVD-RAM.
When I’ve first worked with my late G4 Mac, his superdrive was DVD-RAM,but at the time I was not interested about making DVD in any form (Rec or Backup)
My favorite media for sounds (samplers) was always Max MO, and some users even today have MO media since 1979 and this media is still readable and operational ! (Tahiti drives)
This media is for good reasons nr.1 choice for most delicate archive grade purposes (military,hospital,science,…) and DVD-RAM is really best marriage of MO and CD technology.
Why I mention this?
Because DVD-RAM is as we speak (due to better affordability) more and more used for super safe backup purposes.
What most of people don’t know is that this is much more advanced system them DVD-+/R/RW,more robust and more pro in quality. DVD media today is made like CD, basically by anyone and you will find from mediocre to better quality. Every DVD-RAM media is tested and tested before ready for sale. Naturally that makes the same much more expensive but in long run it is worth it.
But the best thing with DVD-RAM is the way you approach to this media in everyday operations.
There is no final session or any half useful pocket writing drivers that really only make thing a but easier but not really in any substantial way.
You can use the same just as any HD, in fact you can even format media as FAT32. Erase it like you would with any removable or HD hardware.
Just few days ago I brought new DVD multi read/write for PC and found truly a bliss when teamed DVD-RAM with Sound Forge 7.
I placed SF7 path of temporary files right to DVD-RAM, and SF7 works smoothly as with any HD. I usually leave SF to record some interviews from radio and this made entirely new meaning of recording and flexibility.
Leaving precious drives in sleep while DVD-RAM records is simply fantastic.
I even tested using the same just for temporary files, this worked great !!!!
I use SCSI drive for OS and SATA/PATA for files but making another drive just for temporary files sometimes (not always with U320) makes visible boost in performance.
