I am really new to the recording world. I have an awesome PC, and I purchased a very nice 2 channel preamp and a Shure SM57 microphone. I have used Cool Edit, and Quartz Audio. However, I can not get vocals to sound good. If I sing with any force, it cracks, almost as if you turned your radio up really loud. If I get further away from the mic, it's not loud enough to pick it up. What am I doing wrong here? This is really starting to frustrate me. I just need to know how to record a descent sound without sounding like I'm on a telephone. I'm not really sure, I mean, do the recordings sound bad when they it professionally, and then they edit the cuts to make them sound rich and good? Help!

What soundcard are you using after the preamp?

what nice preamp do you have?

what is your soundcard?

how to you connect everything together?

how to you set the settings of your preamp?
