i am wanting to turn my pc into a studio. i don't need anything really special just enough to make a demo cd. here are the specs on my pc- pent III 440/13g hard drive/128 ram/. i know i will need to buy a sound card and probably some more memory and hard drive since mine is kind of filled up w/ mp3s. what i am wondering is what would be the best sound card to buy? would it be better to buy one with the jacks right on the front, or one that goes to a converter or whatever? I probably will most of time just be recording from a line 6 pod, drum machine, but i will ocasionally want to record with a mic and from the pa. i need to know what i need to buy to get it into the comp, i already got cakewalk 9 but the only way i got to get it in is through a 1/8 ac. also can i run my stock sound card with the other one, i want to try and keep it able to be used as a personal computer

You may want to refer back to the "Echo MIA or Equivalent" thread posted in this same section and note the critical points mentioned such as compatibility issues and intermediate device(s) needed to input your sound into the card.

Other than that, do what I did. Visit your local music stores, talk to people, ask about their setups (most stores have their own little studios set up), etc. A good book probably wouldn't hurt either, that's my next step.

I'm a newbie, like yourself, and have spent the last 2 weeks just researching and I should be ready to make a purchase here pretty soon.

Best of luck!

Ive been recording with my stock wdm cyrstal card from HP for almost 9 months and love it! I say as long as its full duplex and can accept 1/8 mini jack and maybe game port for midi adaptor then keep it and use it untill you say " this thing SUCKS!!" which i personally have not said yet and I get some good recording, thats my opinion:)
