Hey,

Is their a sound card that supports surround sound but can be used as a recording sound card?

If not, is it possible to have 2 sound cards in your computer?

If I can't do that, I'll just use my Lexicon Alpha USB OSIO Driver thing.

In the future, what should I consider getting? Should I go with Firewire?

The biggest problem with trying to use 2 or more soundcards in one box is that the crystal clocks in each of them will beat differently over time, leading to tracks that don't synch up.

Plus, the drivers from different manufacturers can easily conflict.

Best advice is to save your pennies and get a card that has MORE i/o than you think you need and is expandable.

Great guide and 'you cant go wrong' suggestions here:

I'm not sure why anybody would want to do surround sound in an audio card anyway. Seems to me that it makes more sense to just feed the encoded data (it's really just a bag of bits, after all) to an S/PDIF optical output and route that to an amplifier that does surround decoding....

Unless, of course, you are mixing for surround, in which case you're in a world of hurt no matter what interface you use. :D

No, I'm not planning on recording in surround sound. I have desktop speakers so I'll use those. I can use my OSIO driver. I don't know, I'll have to see how it goes.
