Sound card overkill?

I've been looking at the Digi100, but I'm starting to wonder if that many inputs (8) isn't overkill if I already have a 16 channel mixer. Is there any reason to have so much I/O when all I'll really need are two for the mixer output? I guess maybe just in case?
Does anyone have any recommendations for sound cards around the price range of the Digi100?

So you're just going to mix while recording and create a 2 track master right from the source? What if later you want to bring the bass track up...and then realize that there IS no bass track? Think about it!

Well, I usually record all tracks separately, but I guess you have a good point if I want to do things simultaneously....
 
Ah, now I see what you're getting at. In your original post you mentioned a "16 channel mixer" which implied that you were recording many sources simultaneously.

If you're only going to record a few sources at once, then you can certainly get away with a card that only has say 4 analog ins & outs like the m-Audio Delta44 or Delta66. I wouldn't recommend going with anything less than 4, however. There will most definately be a time when you want to record three or four sources simultaneously...even if you're all by your lonesome. (e.g. micing a drum kit, stereo micing a guitar and a mic for vocals, etc etc). And it's best to record each source to its own track....things tend to sound different with time and when you start mixing, you want as much flexibility as you can get.
